Welcome
At SafeOnline Women Kenya (SOW-Kenya), we believe every woman and girl deserves to feel safe and confident online. Our story began in 2023, when our founder faced cyberbullying that escalated into real-world stalking, an experience that revealed what so many Kenyan women go through with nowhere safe to turn. From that lived experience, a movement was born.
Since then, we have equipped over 100 women through our TechSecure Literacy Curriculum, with 90% reporting stronger digital safety skills. We have also raised women’s voices in 127 policy dialogues, 55 panels and 61 campaigns, shaping national, regional and international conversations on Technology Facilitated Gender Based Violence (TFGBV). Our digital campaigns have reached more than 5,300 people, sparking awareness both online and offline and change across communities.
At the heart of this work is the SafeHer App, Kenya’s first women-centered digital safety platform. Built with and for women, it offers anonymous reporting, Guardian support and access to legal and mental health services, all while ensuring privacy and security.
Together with partners and supporters, we are creating an internet where women and girls can learn, connect and thrive without fear.
TechSecure Literacy Curriculum
Translating digital safety into local languages to reach every grassroots community.
Our TechSecure Literacy Curriculum takes women and girls through four key modules that strengthen their digital confidence. Module 1: Online Safety shows how to navigate the internet while keeping personal information secure. Module 2: Cybersecurity teaches how to spot threats and protect yourself online. Module 3: Data Protection guides participants on safeguarding their information and handling breaches if they occur. Module 4: Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) helps women understand, prevent, and respond to online abuse, so they can engage safely and confidently in digital spaces.
SafeHer Mobile Application
Tech for Safety
SafeHer is a mobile platform designed to keep women and girls safe online. Built on the principles of Safety by Design, it helps prevent online abuse before it escalates, offering secure, anonymous reporting alongside legal and mental health support. Users stay in control of how incidents are handled, while clear roles and accountability measures make the process transparent. The app was created with input from Kenyan women and girls, especially from marginalized communities, and includes WhatsApp integration for low-bandwidth and low-literacy contexts. Privacy and security are at its core, with end-to-end encryption, secure authentication, role-based access and compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019 all explained in a simple, user-friendly way.
